Dr Mostafa Khalil, Co-Founder and Clinical Lead of YMK Clinic.

Say plainly what a treatment can and cannot do, and be willing to advise against it.

Background

Mostafa studied medicine at the University of Dundee and graduated top of his class in 2017. He is now in higher specialist training in ophthalmology, a surgical specialty, working as an ST6 registrar in Glasgow. He operates and runs eye clinics in the NHS.

He placed fifth nationally in the Duke-Elder Examination and holds a Special Commendation from the President of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He has received the NHS Tayside STAR Award twice, for Innovation and Improvement and as Young Achiever of the Year.

Teaching and writing

Alongside clinical work, he co-founded Learn in 10 Ltd, an education platform that produces courses, revision resources and question banks for medical students and specialist trainees.

He wrote The Duke-Elder Exam of Ophthalmology: A Comprehensive Guide for Success and Dermatology Multiple Choice Questions & Notes, both intended to help students and doctors preparing for postgraduate examinations.

Explaining things for a living has an obvious effect on how you consult. He tends to draw.

His role at the clinic

Mostafa handles anatomical assessment and treatment planning, and is responsible for the clinic's clinical standards.

Working in ophthalmology means his NHS week is spent on eyes and the tissue around them. It is unforgiving territory. Patients notice a difference of a millimetre in an eyelid, and they notice it in a way they would not notice the same difference in a cheek.

His view of aesthetic treatment is that the plan is the hard part. Injecting is a skill, but deciding whether to inject, where, and whether to stop is where results are actually won or lost.

How he works with patients

He'll ask you to talk while he watches your face move. He'll usually explain the anatomy behind what you're describing, because most people find the reason more useful than the recommendation.

He'd rather you understood the reasoning than simply took his word for it.
